Pew Research Center took a snapshot of news stories on user-generated sites such as Reddit, Digg and Del.ic.ious, comparing them with those in mainstream US news and, not suprisingly, found a different focus. Mainstream news focused on stories about Iraq and immigration (research was late June 2007), user-generated sites were more exercised by the release of the iPhone and the fortunes of Sony and Nintendo. Not surprising given the user group. More interesting was the more eclectic range of stories in user-generated news: 'a little about a lot of things' compared to the extensive and more durable coverage in mainstream news. About a quarter of the 'user-generated' content was drawn directly from mainstream sites, with only about 1% actually user-generated from scratch.
